Walking Dead

I was not on board with the comic at the start. Zombie Comic? WTF!? Not my thing. After picking up the first Compendium during Free Comic Book Day, because I could not find anything else to buy, then reading it, I was stunned. STUNNED! It was an incredible story. Then the second Compendium came out, and I read it. I then bought the comic books starting from #97. #96 was the end of the second Compendium, and had introduce Negan.

After that, I was hooked. Since then, I have continued to collect “The Walking Dead“.

Recently, I have been checking out trade paper backs from my local library. I love the library. I rediscovered my love for libraries half a decade ago. South Milwaukee Library is part of the Milwaukee Public Libraries system, and it has been the greatest joy in years. Please go to your library and support it.

One of the books I decided to check out from my local library was “The Walking Dead, Compendium Number One“. I decided to re-read this tome. After years of not having read it, and being exposed to the most recent Walking Dead comics, as well as the television series, I realized, the writing was brilliant.

How often did our ancient ancestors go on a Mammoth Hunt for food and feel board?

One of the things that struck me as interesting is how the survivors viewed the “Zombies”. After Rick and his group cleared the prison of zombies, the survivors burned the corpses. The corpses were people, but those people were just masses of undead without names. When it came to having to deal with people the survivors knew, those corpses were buried with some form of ceremony. The survivors honored their dead. Any other dead, were just trash to be incinerated.

The survivors realized that when they die, they turn into zombies. It did not matter. In the television series, Rick discovered this after visiting the CDC office in Atlanta. In the comic, Rick came upon this realization after Tyrees killed his daughter’s boyfriend, after a failed suicide pact. In the comic, Rick came upon this realization after Tyreese killed his daughter’s boyfriend, after a failed suicide pact. Tyreese’s daughter came back to life, and had not been bitten. The bite kills, but does not infect.

When the survivors found Alexandria, the distinction between friend and dead became very apparent. Once the survivors had firmly established themselves in communities, and networked together, anyone who died was ceremoniously staked in the head. It harkens back to the old Vampire concept in various Eastern European Cultures, where a stake was driven through the heart of a suspected vampire or to keep a person who died from becoming a vampire. In the case of “The Walking Dead” it was not a superstition. When people died of natural or unnatural causes, but those people were friendly, those dead individuals would end up becoming zombies. The only way to stop zombies from overrunning society was to put a stake in the dead person’s head. Common sense solution to a larger problem.

Pick up “The Walking Dead” compendiums or any trade paperbacks you can. If you are not a zombie comic fan, this series will make you a zombie comic fan. It made me one.

Scarface

scarface

One of the most quoted movies and probably quotable movies ever made, Scarface, is one movie I end up watching at least once a year. When the movie came out originally, it did not do overly well at the box-office. Scarface became such a cult hit, it inspired a lot of merchandise, as well as perpetual re-releases on DVD and Blu-Ray, which provided more content or insight into the film. Watching it with some detachment it is somewhat over the top and cheesy, but that is also what makes it so dynamic.

Al Pacino, plays Tony Montana, an immigrant who came over during the Marianas Boat Lift. He was held in detention, because he was a suspected criminal sent over with the average Cubans trying to escape. While in detention, Tony and his friend, Manny Ribera, played by Seven Bauer, agree to kill a former member of Castro’s Communist party, who had fallen out of favor. Castro had imprisoned Emilio Rebenga, and decided to get rid of him. The man who hired Tony and his friends to kill Rebenga had enough power and influence to get the men green cards. When the two men leave the camp, they have jobs a dishwashers and cooks, but see wealth. Finally Tony accepts a job to retrieve cocaine from some suppliers.

This is where Scarface begins to build his life as a criminal, drug dealer, then drug kingpin. In one of the most gross, and bloody scenes to be filmed in a movie, Tony is willing to sacrifice a friend, to get what he wants. In doing this, Tony shows his utter ruthlessness, but also his psychotic side.

We get further insight into Tony’s psychotic side when the film begins to show his incestuous attraction to his sister Gina, played by Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio. Tony’s friend and ultimately trusted right hand man shows some interest in Tony’s sister. Immediately Tony becomes aggressive and warns his friend off.

Tony’s obsession with his sister become’s more apparent when Tony and his friend enter The Babylon Club, a popular club, featured in the movie multiple times. Gina is dancing with a man, and they leave to make out in a stall in the bathroom. Tony follows them, and beats up the man, slaps his sister, then sends her home with his friend.

Tony shows more covetous behavior and desire for power when he steals the girlfriend, Elvira Hancock, played by Michelle Pfeiffer, of the man who originally gave Tony the opportunity, Frank Lopez, played by Robert Loggia.

All the events Tony orchestrates for his own power and greed, betraying those he feels deserve betrayal, and rewarding or intimidating those whom are loyal. All done with utter ruthlessness.

The movie follows Tony’s rise and fall. His own fall is due to his hubris, and very psychotic behavior. This movie is long, over two hours, but the time does pass quickly.

Age Brady Children

October 17th, 2018 by

In a previous post, I posited that Mike and Carol could have had a child even near the end of the final season, because of their ages. I used the ages of the two oldest children Greg and Marcia to deduce the age of Mike and Carol. The producers chose the ages of the children for various plot reasons. Greg was 14 at the start of the show, Marcia was 12, Peter was 11, Jan was 10, Bobby was 8, and Cindy was 6. These ages reflected some of their behaviors toward each other, and the grouping of three in the tween area allowed for growth. Unfortunately with all child actors, especially in the case of Bobby and Cindy, cuteness wears off. Look at the final season where Bobby had braces, and Cindy was no longer a cute little girl with a lisp and thus could not pull off cute little girl things. Carol Brady being pregnant would have been more conductive to the show being extended for another season than mocking pregnancy to introduce Cousin Oliver.

Greg being the oldest would have the most ground breaking moments. Greg was looking to buy a car, and got a job as an office boy in the architectural firm with a homicidal boss. The following year Greg entered high school and because he was a man wanted his own space. In the Episode “Our Son, The Man“, Greg persuaded Mike into giving up his den in order for it to be converted to a bedroom. Marcia being two years behind Greg would fuel her own form of competition, since she was no longer the oldest in the family. Her drive to be queen bee of the Brady girls got her into various forms of trouble. Marcia wanted to be a scout to prove she was as good as the boys, thus forcing retaliation, because Greg was too old, Peter was forced by his older brother into becoming a Sunflower Girl. Peter was the middle child between Greg, now Marcia, and then Jan, Bobby and Cindy. Jan seemed to not identify too much with Greg, but felt like she was second to Marcia all the time. Bobby being the youngest boy always sought attention from Greg, pestered Peter constantly, but at least could be a hero to Cindy. Cindy was always wanting to be older than she was.

Through out the entire Brady Bunch run, the children grew up. Greg always maintaining his top dog status, though he was at times taken down a peg or two by his younger siblings. It seemed Marcia was always his foil, except Jan seemed to be able to compete on an even field once Jan began developing lady bumps. Greg was graduating high school and heading to college in the last episode of the show. Which means Jan began working at Haskell’s Ice Cream Parlor at 14, maybe 15. Which makes the Brady children exceptionally ambitious when it comes to work. Also, you should feel dirty if you are lusting after Marcia and Jan in their bikinis during the Hawaii Episode, Marcia was 15 and Jan 13.

Schooling was a big deal with the Brady Bunch. Westdale High School, Fillmore Junior High, and Clinton Elementary School were the schools attended by the children. Ultimately they all went to different colleges, and entered careers. Greg became a OB/GYN, Marcia was a fashion designer until she married because she could not stand the thought of Jan beating her to the alter, then Marcia became an alcoholic housewife. Jan became an architect in Boston, married to a professor. Peter went into the Air Force, then became a stock broker. Bobby went to college, graduated, was going for a masters in business, but dropped out to become a race car driver, then ended up in a wheelchair. Cindy managed to graduate college, and worked for a radio station.

Ultimately, the Brady children fell into a sort of age dynamic which played out in their adult lives. Greg being the oldest, was the most successful. Even though Marcia was the oldest girl, she was second child, and was not as successful. Peter played the second boy to a tee, not really expected to work out, but just getting by. Jan was more driven, and probably felt relieved to be the fourth child. Bobby and Cindy were both the children whom did not grow up in some way.

Of course, growing up and sharing a bathroom with no toilet could have had a major affect on certain aspects of life.
